Word of the Day

  • Choose a word that relates to the theme of the day. The word should be relatively uncommon in normal usage but not so unusual that it can not be used throughout the meeting.
  • A good source is www.dictionary.com. Insert a common word related to the theme of the day in the search box, click on Thesaurus for some new words, select a word or two and insert in the search box and click dictionary. It should display the pronunciation, definition, usages and origin.
  • There are two templates on the website for you to use to prepare a visual reminder - the Table Top Format and the Wall Format; always prepare copies of the Table Format [at least 3 copies the boardroom table] and make 4 copies of the Wall Format to put on each wall.
  • To download a copy of each template click here: Wall Sign template.docTable Top template.doc
  • At the meeting, present the word, its definition, and provide an example of its use in a sentence.
  • Presentation of the Word of the Day should be brief – maximum of one minute.
  • Tell the members that you will be counting the number of times the Word is used and the number of um's, ah's and filler words such as 'and, well, but, so, you know'.
  • When called upon at the end of the meeting, report the usage of the Word and the number of um's, ah's and filler words so speakers are aware of a developing habit.

Meetings held every Tuesday 12:15-1:30 PM
